The internet is fantastic, but there are risks to kids, and your involvement is essential in keeping them safe.
Here is a checklist of precautions that you should review with your kids before they go online. If you stick to them, your kids should have a safe and enjoyable experience online.
Always ask your parents' permission before giving out any personal information on the Internet. This includes: your name, gender, phone number, address, e-mail, school name, telephone numbers, or picture.
Only use chat rooms for kids that your parents have checked out and approved first
Always use a nickname that doesn’t reveal anything about yourself – including if you are a boy or girl
Never respond to an online message that makes you feel uncomfortable or frightened. Instead, tell an adult you trust right away.
Never meet an “online friend” in person without asking your parents for permission. Always ask them to go with you.
Always treat people nicely when you’re online and never post or send rude messages or threats.
Always ask permission from the author before taking words, pictures or sounds from a Web site.
Do not believe everything you read online. Always check out the source of information.
Never open an attachment email without asking your parents permission first.
